SAINT MARTIN'S UNIVERSITY
LACEY, WASHINGTON

TITLE: RESIDENCE DIRECTOR
REPORTS TO: Director of Housing & Residence Life
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
GENERAL
The Residence Director is responsible for creating a supportive residential
living environment that promotes the values and practice of Catholic, Benedictine
living. As an engaged member of the community, the RD serves as a supervisor,
mentor, resource person, and role-model. The RD is responsible for the day-to-day
operations of one to three residence halls, supervising 5 to 8 Resident Assistants.
This position also is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the summer
conference housing program and supervision of Conference Assistants. Residence
Director is a 12-month position and the RD must live in a residence hall apartment.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL ACTIVITIES
Develop
a community-focused environment which encourages the personal growth of students.
" Use student development theory and assessment tools to address the needs
and concerns of the community.
" Promote the development of residents and encourage a rich knowledge of
self and others.
" Develop meaningful connections with students and provide opportunities
for residents to build connections with other members of the campus community.
" Plan, promote, coordinate, and evaluate programming that integrates a
student development model with both social and educational outcomes.
" Create and promote in-hall and campus-wide leadership opportunities.
" Co-advise the Residence Hall Council.
" Encourage students to take personal responsibility for communal and global
issues.
Supervise,
train, and evaluate student staff.
" Conduct weekly staff meetings and one-on-one meetings with residence
hall staff.
" Cooperatively plan and implement on-going training for residence hall
staff.
" Support and encourage the development of leadership skills within student
staff members.
" Conduct performance reviews with residence hall staff.
Communicate
behavioral expectations to residents.
" Enforce SMU policies and procedures, ensure students' rights, and emphasize
community values and responsibilities.
" Train residence hall staff to develop and maintain community standards.
" Maintain and safeguard student judicial records.
" Administer and interpret the university judicial process by utilizing
an educational and developmental approach to student conduct situations.
" Preside over judicial hearings and develop and administer appropriate
educational sanctions.
Assist in
the overall operation of the Office of Housing and Residence Life.
" Work collaboratively on projects with the department office.
" Be attentive to the safety, security, and cleanliness of the residence
halls in cooperation with maintenance, custodial, and security staff members.
" Provide on-call, all-campus duty coverage on a rotational basis.
" Maintain accurate room occupancy data by processing room changes and
withdrawals.
" Participate in various departmental projects such as staff selection,
staff training, recognition and appreciation, etc.
" Process administrative requests in a timely manner and offer exemplary
customer service to students, parents, and outside agencies.
Work cooperatively
with other college constituencies to provide quality service to students and
engage in on-going professional and personal development.
" Participate in the performance appraisal process.
" Serve on University-wide professional staff selection committees as needed.
" Participate in staff meetings, on-campus professional development activities,
and regional and national conferences and committees.
" Represent the department on campus-wide committees as needed.
" Fulfill other roles and duties as assigned by the Director of Housing
and Residence Life.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
" Ability
to recognize and appreciate differences in individuals and communities, and
to facilitate community building within the residence halls.
" Ability to work flexible hours, including evening and weekend events
and on-call responsibilities.
" Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of administrators,
faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
" Excellent analytical, managerial, oral, and written communication and
interpersonal skills.
" Excellent organizational and administrative skills and experience.
" Working knowledge of computer functions, including Microsoft Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Publisher, Internet Explorer, and Outlook.

" The
ability to move objects (20-50 pounds), such as bed frames and mattresses moderate
distances and potentially up and down stairs.
" The ability to be mobile campus-wide for appropriate business needs.
" The ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment requiring
continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree (Master's Degree in student services, education administration,
or other related discipline preferred) and at least two years experience living
in a residence hall environment. The ability to reside in the provided on-campus
apartment year-round. Experience in working with a diverse population. Must
be supportive of a Catholic, Benedictine philosophy of education.
