Tyler’s Message

Greetings WACUHO!!!

October is the time in which we are all hitting our stride, under normal circumstances.  But these aren’t normal circumstances.  In my recent facebook live broadcast, I asked folx how they were doing.  Overwhelmingly, the response was in unison – “exhausted.”  So much is happening in our world, in our country, in our state.  Our hearts go out to our colleagues in Northern California as they continue to deal with the impact of devastating fires.

If you want to get caught up on what is happening with WACUHO, check out the broadcast from last week here.  Moving forward, we are going to start engaging in the work of our Association.  The RAPs are coming up, and I will be traveling throughout the state in November to see the future of our field!  I am very excited to visit with colleagues from across the state and region.

I want to get back to the sentiment of professionals across our field.  Collectively, we are exhausted.  First, take solace that you are not alone.  Second, this is a great time to be reminded that has caretakers, we need to focus on taking care of ourselves.  It often feels “selfish” to want to spend time taking care of ourselves, but by doing so, you are going to be more effective in helping others out.  You need to be your number 1 priority.  A wise mentor once shared “saying ‘no’ to something is saying ‘yes’ to something else.”  If you are constantly telling work “yes” and you are telling yourself “no” – that will burn you out.  It’s time to remember, we are running a marathon of a journey.  This is not supposed to be a sprint.  If you need a break, take a break.  Talk with your supervisor about support.

At the same time, we need to recognize that what I just wrote comes from a place of privilege.  Not all of us are in positions where we can find support from our supervisors (or society) to take care of our own emotional well being.  If you find yourself here, I’d encourage you to reach out to colleagues on other campuses who can help you navigate that support.

Again, if there is anything our Association can do to support you, please ask.  What we do is very unique.  All of us play a role in shaping the next generation of leaders, and that is something to both be proud of, and understand the emotional toll that can take.  Take care of yourself!  Hopefully I will see you at a RAP in the next month!

WACE 2019

Hello WACUHO!

We, Kelly Cole and Mako Ushihara, are excited to announce and invite you to start planning to attend the 2019 WACUHO Annual Conference and Exposition (WACE) hosted by Stanford University in the lively and dynamic City of Oakland, CA https://www.visitoakland.com. The urban-chic downtown Marriott City Center Hotel http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/oakdt-oakland-marriott-city-center/ will serve as our conference venue.  With us both being Bay Area natives, we are extremely proud to welcome our WACUHO colleagues from across the region to the Bay Area and specifically to the City of Oakland that is truly one of the most diverse, interesting, and accessible major cities in the Bay Area.

We hope that in addition to joining us for the conference dates of Sunday April 14, 2019 through Wednesday April 17, 2019, you consider tacking on an extra day or two to your conference travel plans to allow you to check out the many Oakland specific or Bay Area attractions that are available:

Oakland:

Travel to the hotel will be very easy from both Oakland and San Francisco International airports via our BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) subway system so no need to rent a car to get from the airport to the conference hotel.  Folks flying into San Jose International can also take BART to get to the hotel, but would need to add a bus leg to their travel plans.  We have lots of information to share with you about the conference, and we will begin to do so each month in WAVES.  For now, we wanted to get some basic information out there so you could begin your travel/professional development planning.

In the coming months, we will begin sharing information about the various ways that our Stanford and WACUHO colleagues can get involved in this great conference. There are a number of involvement opportunities:

Updates from the Strategic Planning Task Force

The Strategic Planning Task force has been hard at work on 5 exciting new initiatives for this year.  The task force members include: Alex Belisario (UC Santa Cruz), Connie Huyck (CSU Chico), DeVaughn King (UCLA), Erin Martinez (USC), Sally Morgan (LMU), Andrew Philippo (Marymount California University) and Emily Sandoval (USC). The 5 initiatives are:

  • Create a charge and plan for a new WACUHO Assessment/Research Committee.
  • Explore an update of our Mission, Values and Goals
  • Work with the WACUHO Task Force on Equity and Inclusion and Nominations committee, explore a restructure of the executive committee (including the nominations process) to be more inclusive of all members of the Association.
  • Create an onboarding plan for new committee chairs and executive committee members
  • Develop a “cycle of engagement” for new members to find their path of involvement, from Grad student to Senior Housing Officer and everywhere in between.

Now that we have all made it through opening (congrats!) and our semesters/quarters are well under way, you will see some of us begin to reach out to start moving the needle on these initiatives.  A survey will be sent out within the next month to get feedback on our Mission, Values, and Goals as well as to assess the effectiveness of the current executive committee structure.  You will also see some of us at the upcoming RAPs! There, we will be hosting roundtables to get in-person feedback from association members that will help us assess the current state of the association and guide us as we move forward on the above tasks.

SRAP

Greetings!

Southern RAP is right around the corner! The SRAP Conference is a one-day regional professional development opportunity geared toward undergraduate student leaders in the areas of housing, residence life, and student programming. The Conference strives to connect student leaders from different schools, promote idea-sharing, and renew enthusiasm for leaders’ respective institutions and positions.

Team SRAP Unite! – This one-day conference focuses on embracing the concepts of being a hero (in whatever capacity that may be), being a leader on our campuses and amongst peers, and utilizing our strengths to the betterment of our communities.

2017-2018 Membership Drive

WACUHO invites you to renew or consider initiating a new membership with WACUHO for the 2017-2018 academic year!

Remember that membership in WACUHO is INSTITUTIONAL, not individual.  Each campus establishes only ONE membership per year.  The only exception to this is for private housing programs which are not operated directly by the campus; these programs must establish their own membership separately from the institution.

We are managing our membership through a new online process that ACUHO-I is managing for us as a part of our central office agreement.  Thus, you may renew or establish your membership now at http://apps.acuho-i.org/wacuho/WACUHOMembership/

Membership fees are based on the number of occupied spaces you have (or expect to have) for Fall 2017:

0-1000 beds- $100
1001-2000 beds- $200
2001-4000 beds- $370
4001-6000 beds- $550

Tyler’s Message

Greetings WACUHO Colleagues!

September is a time where those of us in semester schools have the opportunity to catch our breath, get into a rhythm, and start our weekly routine.  I hope you had a smooth opening and are getting settled!

For those of us at Quarter Schools, we are just settling into RA training and getting prepared for opening our halls!  It’s that crunch time of year where we plan, preparing, and do our best to anticipate the chaos of opening!

Our field is experiencing some interesting issues moving forward, and we need to make sure we are having discussions around supporting our students in the aftermath of DACA, Title IX instabilities, and many other decisions that may impact us.  Once again, I want to reiterate the importance of getting help and support for those who need it.

In addition, we need to make sure we are looking ahead as new leadership on our campuses is being developed who have different paradigms and frames of reference for what housing could or should look like.  We cannot rely on current or traditional paradigms of how we do our work to continue being sustainable for the future.  We need to start thinking strategically on our campuses as to how to move the field forward.

In terms of our Association – we are gearing up for an amazing academic year! First let’s talk about our Crowning Gem, the WACUHO Annual Conference and Exposition!  The WACE 2018 team is continuing their work and getting San Diego ready for all of us!!!  We really hope you will make plans to join us in March (25th-28th).  We are anticipating activities for the entire family, so if you have kids, you’ll want to bring them with you!

In addition, later on in this edition of WAVES, you’ll hear our plans for WACE 2019 (yes, that is right – we firmed up WACE 2019 already!).   By December, we are also hoping to have WACE 2020 locked in so that we can present the sites for the next 2 years of WACE at our annual business meeting in San Diego in March of 2018, which gets us back into compliance with our association by-laws!  (Article V, Section 2)

Our transition to having ACUHO-I serve as our central office is going well.  Last year’s president, Cindy Derrico (along with a team of dedicated professionals) is doing some terrific work with ACUHO-I getting us up and running.  We are working to get our membership registration system up and running soon, so that all of our institutions will have an easy time renewing their membership!  We also have heard we may have some new schools joining us this next academic year, but more on that once it becomes official!!

The Task Force for Equity and Inclusion is continuing their work under the leadership of Crystal Lay.  They are currently working on a climate assessment for the Association with the goal on reporting back in March on how our members feel in terms of the Association.

Unfortunately, with training, opening, and everything else happening, we will not have a live broadcast for September.  Instead, plan on joining me for lunch on Thursday, October 12th.  I’ll fill you in on what we discussed at our in-person executive meeting, WACE updates, and report back on some of the initiatives announced on July 1st.  

One of those areas that I hope to be able to report back on is the Anonymous reporting mechanism for bias related incidents.  We are putting the final eyes on it, and are hoping to launch in the next month.  Be on the lookout for more info!

Our Finance Advisory Committee is working with Jenna Hazelton (our Treasurer) to set up a five year financial plan to help us cover the long term costs of having ACUHO-I as our Central Office.  In addition, they are helping Jenna put together the 2018-2019 budget to be presented at the annual business meeting!

Finally, Executive Committee is meeting on September 15th via phone conference, and then we will be visiting UC Santa Cruz for our Fall In-Person meeting on October 5&6th.  Be on the lookout for posting the agendas on our Facebook page (WACUHO Family and Friends) and our website.

So much more is going on, but for now, this should keep you in the loop on most major items!  Thank you again for all the feedback and communication.  It is our goal to respond quickly and nimbly to information as they come up!

But wait – one more thing!  We are beginning the transition process and looking for a new Marketing and Communications Coordinator really soon – so if you have an interest in joining the executive committee, please consider applying.  More details to come – but the position is a two year commitment (going through June 30, 2019).

Interested in Running for WACUHO Executive Committee?

Have you been thinking about serving as a member of the Executive Committee of WACUHO?  Or, do you wish to nominate an individual whom you believe will serve well the Association well on the Executive Committee?  Our next election will be at the annual business meeting at the annual conference, WACE, March 25 – 28, in San Diego, CA.  The nomination and application process will open in November 2017 and candidate applications will be due in February 2018.  We are eager to see a diverse group of professionals serve on the committee, so we hope any housing professionals who are committed to WACUHO will consider running for office.  And, consider now how your campus colleagues will caucus in advance of, or while attending WACE, to making voting decisions.  Questions about serving on the Executive Committee may be directed to any current member – a list of their names and information can be found here.

ACUHO-I/WACUHO Central Office Partnership

As most of you will remember, our membership voted to support the implementation of a central office initiative whereby ACUHO-I would be engaged to support a number of our financial and administrative functions so that our volunteers can focus more specifically on their assigned programs and initiatives.  This process has begun in earnest and we’ve completed a few meetings already.  We are presently in the data collection phase that will be used to set up systems such as one-day and annual conference registration, banking, membership, program submissions, etc.  We are hoping to roll out the membership renewal process shortly through ACUHO-I – we appreciate your patience in this process!  We have identified a seasoned group of WACUHO members to assist in this process and I’m very encouraged by our progress to date.  We have also entered into a separate agreement with ACUHO-I for a conference app to support our online information and connections at our various conferences throughout the year.  I hope to provide an update monthly as we move ahead, but any with questions are invited to contact me.
